Las Vegas Westgate workers reach agreement with management

Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino is the latest Las Vegas hotel to reach a tentative agreement with hotel employees represented by the Culinary Alliance.

The resort-casino, formerly known as the Las Vegas Hilton, signed new contracts with more than 1,000 hotel employees over the weekend.

The contract is expected to be for five years. It still needs approval from rank-and-file union members.

The union did not provide details of the new contract, saying in a social media post on Sunday that it was the "best contract ever."

Negotiations with 18 properties continue

Even with this tentative agreement, the Culinary Alliance is still in talks with 18 other hotels in Las Vegas. These venues are independent or small casino hotels located on the Las Vegas Strip or in downtown Las Vegas.

The roughly 6,000 union members are threatening to strike if they fail to accept the properties by 5 a.m. on February 2, 2024, according to a union post on X (formerly Twitter). The union has begun informational demonstrations at several Las Vegas casinos.

Hotels that have not yet reached tentative agreements include Circus Circus, Hilton Grand Vacations, Rio, Sahara Las Vegas, Strat Casino, Treasure Island, Virgin Hotels, Binion's, Circa, Downtown Grand, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Main Street, D and Plaza.

Trump, Waldorf-Astoria Settlement

Last week, the union announced a tentative agreement with the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The agreement was reached after 16 hours of closed-door negotiations. The agreement, subject to rank-and-file approval, will run for five years and cover 350 hotel employees.

The Culinary Alliance recently announced settlements with hotel employees at the Mirage, Tropicana and Four Seasons. The union previously reached a tentative agreement with hotel workers at the Waldorf Astoria in Las Vegas.

In November, members of the Culinary Alliance reached an agreement with the management of three major casino companies: Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International. By these comparisons the planned strike for 10 November was averted.

The Wynn, MGM and Caesars deals resulted in 10% raises for hotel workers in the first year of their contracts, according to Culinary Union. You will receive a cumulative increase of 32% compared to the contract period.

In these deals, workers won other non-economic victories, including the promise of job security.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 represent approximately 60,000 bartenders, bellhops, cocktail servers, cooks, food servers, maids, kitchen workers, laundry staff and porters.
