In an unexpected turn of events, German customs officials have seized over 10,000 cigarettes in Upper Bavaria following a controlled stop on the A94 motorway in Erding.
The incident occurred in Lengdorf, Upper Bavaria, where the customs office announced the stop of a small transporter vehicle driven by a 40-year-old man. Initially, the driver claimed to have only brought the permitted quantity of cigarettes to Lengdorf. However, further inspection of the vehicle revealed a hidden compartment within the double bottom of the truck.
The cigarettes, which were not part of the initially declared cargo, were found concealed in this hidden compartment. The smuggling attempt resulted in a tax loss of over 2,430 euros.
The driver was traveling with eight passengers at the time of the seizure. No further details about the consequences for the individuals involved were provided in the announcement.
This is not the first time that German customs have intercepted large quantities of cigarettes being smuggled into the country illegally. The cigarettes were being smuggled into Germany in a bid to evade taxes and regulations.
The customs office urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to tobacco smuggling, emphasising the importance of cooperation in maintaining a fair and law-abiding society.
