'Labour's Secretary for DEFRA defends proposals for inheritance tax: Larger farm estates to bear the tax burden'
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has launched a campaign against proposed changes to the 'family farm tax', a move that is expected to persist in the coming days, weeks, and months. The campaign, spearheaded by NFU President Tom Bradshaw, aims to reverse these changes, which have sparked controversy in the agricultural community.
The hashtag #BackBritishFarming has been widely used in relation to this campaign. The NFU's Digital Director, Toby Keel, who manages the organisation's website and social media channels since 2016, has been instrumental in spreading the word.
The proposed reforms, announced in the budget on an unspecified date, target wealthier estates, not small, family farms. Under the new rules, only a small percentage of farms will become liable for inheritance tax. This contrasts with the belief that all farms would be affected, a notion that has since been deemed inaccurate.
The Labour Government has announced plans to reform Agricultural Property Relief, a move that has raised concerns within the agricultural sector. The Austrian Chamber of Agriculture (Landeskammer Österreich, LKÖ) and the German family business lobby foundation ("Stiftung Familienunternehmen") are among the primary organisations opposing these changes. They argue that these reforms could lead to increased bureaucratic burdens and unfair competition from low-standard imports.
Steve Reed, Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, has written an article in the Daily Telegraph addressing the criticism of the new rules. Reed has expressed concern about wealthy individuals putting large portions of their assets into farming with the intention of avoiding inheritance tax, a practice he believes is detrimental to public services. He believes that rural communities need a better NHS, affordable housing, and public transport, which can be provided if the system is made fairer.
In a recent Property Talk analysis, Annabel Dixon discussed the controversy over the new inheritance tax rules for farmers' estates. The campaign against these changes has been shared on the National Farmers' Union's Twitter account, @NFUtweets.
Toby Keel, who also writes about property, cars, lifestyle, travel, and nature for our platform, has been at the forefront of the digital aspect of the campaign. The changes to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief, could severely impact British farmers and growers, making the campaign's significance impossible to ignore.
