L-Acoustics' cutting-edge audio system enhances the Kay Yeager Coliseum for sports events and concerts.
The Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas, has received a significant sound upgrade, thanks to the efforts of Houston-based LD Systems. The new system, featuring the L-Acoustics A Series, was completed in February 2023 and has been praised for its impactful sound and excellent clarity.
The LD Systems-designed system for the coliseum includes four-enclosure arrays of A15i, two-enclosure hangs in the end zones, several KS21i subs, six coaxial X8 and two X12 fill speakers, ten LA4X, and two LA12X amplified controllers. The A15i system addresses the issue of poor clarity of spoken word in events such as graduations, making it an ideal choice for the versatile venue that can seat up to 10,000 people for various events like sports, concerts, trade shows, and conventions.
LD Systems Engineering Manager, Anthony DiDonato, noted that the municipal venues, including the city-owned MPEC, are seeking high-impact and crisp speech intelligibility from their sound systems. He added that the A15i's light weight and compact form factor easily overcame the rigging challenges in spots.
The system's bass is supplemented by a dozen KS21i subs, ensuring a powerful and resonant low-frequency reproduction for music. The system's design includes a distributed design with a mix of Wide and Focus arrays in different locations, providing coverage for every seat in the coliseum, regardless of the seating configuration.
The integration of a QSC Q-SYS control system allows the venue to turn speaker clusters on and off as events' acoustical and seating needs change. The QSC Q-SYS control system also helps avoid undesired reflections and reverberation by keeping sound where it's wanted and away from where it's not. In addition, the QSC Q-SYS control system can drive an auto-mixer when the Allen & Heath SQ-5 front-of-house console is not needed.
The A15i system offers more than just great sound. It is a highly flexible system that provides the venue with exactly what they need at an affordable cost. The new sound system has significantly improved the audio quality at the coliseum, as noted by venue managers and attendees.
The original sound system at the coliseum, installed two decades ago, was recently upgraded. The Kay Yeager Coliseum, first opened in 2003, is now equipped with a modern and efficient sound system that will serve the community for years to come.
