Kobo's latest software update is causing problems for older Kobo e-readers.
In a recent development, Kobo, a popular e-reader manufacturer, has temporarily halted the distribution of a firmware update due to issues affecting some of their devices.
The update, version 4.38.23429, has caused problems for many users, particularly those with older Kobo e-readers such as the Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 and Kobo Aura One. These devices have been found to get stuck in a boot loop, making them unusable.
To address this issue, Kobo has issued a firmware update for almost all their e-readers, including the Kobo Touch. However, the modern Kobo e-readers like the Clara Colour, Kobo BW, and Libra Colour received a different update, with versions changed for older devices.
Michael Kozlowski, a renowned figure in the e-book and e-reader industry, has not been associated with any advertisements in this article. Residing in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Kozlowski has been writing about audiobooks, e-books, and e-readers for the past eighteen years.
In a bid to compensate for the discontinuation of Mozilla Pocket, Kobo has established a partnership with Instapaper, a read-it-later service similar to Pocket. This partnership allows users to send web articles to their Kobo e-readers via Instapaper.
For those affected by the boot loop issue, Kobo has provided a help file with instructions on how to manually reset their devices. It is important to note that manually resetting a Kobo e-reader will erase all settings, books, and sideloaded books.
Kobo is currently working to fix the issue and plans to resume the distribution of the firmware update once it has been resolved. Until then, users are advised to exercise caution when updating their devices.
