Klutzer Street in Hohenschönhausen: Decision Made for the New Primary School's Site
Berlin Announces Construction of New Elementary School in Hohenschoenhausen
The city of Berlin has announced plans to build a new three-wing elementary school on Klützer Straße in Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen. The school, which will have a total of 432 places, is part of the Berlin school construction offensive aimed at addressing the increasing demand for school places and reducing renovation backlogs.
The Lichtenberg district councilor for school and sport, Sandy Mattes (SPD), described the situation at the elementary schools in Neu-Hohenschoenhausen as very tense. Many schools in the area are already taking on significantly more children than originally planned, and the existing capacities are no longer sufficient, especially in the northern part of Hohenschoenhausen.
The district office aims to implement the new building on Klützer Straße as quickly as possible to relieve pressure on existing schools and continue fulfilling its educational mission. A concrete date for the start of construction has not yet been set, but the planned start is mid-2025.
The school on Klützer Straße will be built using serial timber construction, a method that is intended to reduce costs and shorten construction time. This method has already been used in schools in Lichtenberg, and the school on Klützer Straße will expand the network of schools built using this method. The new school will not only create urgently needed capacity but also serve as an example of modern construction in the education sector.
The land-owned housing association HOWOGE is the client for the new building, and the city aims to cover the costs through a combination of funding from the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing and HOWOGE. The construction project will include a sports hall with two hall parts.
Sandy Mattes stated that the inclusion of the Klützer Straße location in the school construction offensive was a great relief for her. The Berlin school construction offensive is flexible and central to ensuring local education in growing districts like Neu-Hohenschoenhausen. The offensive also includes the renovation of existing schools, and a project is included in the offensive once the Senate Department for Education confirms an additional need.
The Berlin school construction offensive is a welcome development for the residents of Hohenschoenhausen, who have been facing challenges in finding school places for their children. The new school on Klützer Straße is expected to provide much-needed relief and contribute to the continued growth and development of the district.
