Kiev under Siege at Night: Sirens Blaring, Fires Raging, and a Wedding Happening Amidst the Chaos
In the early hours of one morning in August 2025, the city of Kyiv was struck by a series of attacks that left a trail of destruction and grief. The Iranian Shahed drones, supplied to and deployed by the Russian armed forces, targeted a residential building on Boryspilska Street in the Darnytskyi district.
The affected area, devoid of any military significance, was a stark contrast to the bustling weekly market just two hundred metres away. Traders sold fruit, vegetables, and flowers, while neighbours exchanged news, oblivious to the impending danger overhead.
The air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, and numerous other regions, signalling the start of a long and harrowing night. As many as dozens of Iranian Shahed drones made their way towards Kyiv, their throttled motorcycle-like sounds a chilling reminder of the approaching danger.
Between one and three in the morning, multiple Shahed drones and Kinzhal missiles struck residential areas in Kyiv, including the building on Boryspilska Street. The attack resulted in at least 18 deaths, including three children, one of whom was only two years old. Around 40 people were injured.
The defense of Kyiv took place in several rings, with mobile systems, batteries, and camouflaged positions within the city. Despite these efforts, some drones managed to break through the first line of defense and appear directly over the roofs of Kyiv.
Firefighters and police worked side by side to clear rubble and rescue any missing individuals, but hope was slim. The city suddenly emptied almost abruptly as people sought shelter, leaving a ghostly scene illuminated by streetlights.
"The Russians' goal is to demoralize us. They want to break our will because it's easier to control broken people. We will cry later. But they will not break us. Never," said Maria, a driver and translator, her voice steady amidst the chaos.
Stuffed animals, coffee mugs, photo albums lay among concrete rubble, thrown out by the explosion and now relics of an extinguished everyday life. The city, once vibrant and lively, now stood silent, its spirit undeterred but shaken.
Russian Tu-95 bombers were launched from military airbases towards Ukraine, adding to the tension and uncertainty. As the sun rose, Kyiv began to pick up the pieces, its resilience tested but unbroken. The city, much like its people, remained steadfast in the face of adversity.
