Kiev Suffers Deadly Assault by Russian Forces, raising apprehensions about the future of peace negotiations

In a shocking turn of events, Russia launched aerial attacks on Kiev, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 18 lives, including four children. President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the attack as a deliberate killing of civilians and demanded new sanctions on Russia.

The EU formally summoned the Russian Ambassador following the attacks, with the diplomatic representative being the Russian Ambassador to the European Union. The overnight barrage caused significant damage, creating a five-storey crater in one apartment block and damaging European Union diplomatic offices. EU officials posted photos of blown-out windows and the office ceiling partially collapsed.

Galina Shcherbak, a witness, described the attack as glass flying and bombs going off. One victim, Andriy, narrowly escaped death as his flat was destroyed. He stated that he would have been buried if he had gone to the shelter a minute later.

Ukraine has long cast Russia as only paying lip service to the idea of halting its invasion. In response, Ukraine claimed to have hit two large refineries in Russia in its own overnight attacks. However, the Kremlin has rejected multiple ceasefire calls from Zelensky, Trump, and European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron who condemned Russian "terror and barbarism".

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "sabotaging hopes of peace" with the strikes. Moscow is demanding Kiev cede more territory and renounce Western military support as conditions for any peace deal - ultimatums ruled out by Kiev.

Following a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump in Alaska earlier this month, the Kremlin has rebuffed initiatives for a swift end to the fighting. The British Council also announced that its premises had been "severely damaged" and would be closed until further notice.

The attacks on Kiev marked the second-largest overnight barrage of the war, with at least 629 drones and missiles fired by Russia. Zelensky has claimed that Russia is not choosing to end the war and has ruined numerous opportunities for diplomacy. These recent events underscore the escalating tensions and the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
