Kiev celebrates independence amidst pessimistic foretellings of peace settlement

In a powerful speech broadcast on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed his fellow citizens on Independence Day, standing firm on Ukraine's commitment to independence. The speech was delivered in front of the Independence Square in Kiev, with the Statue of Liberty on the Maidan serving as a symbolic backdrop.

Zelensky congratulated Ukrainians on this significant day, expressing his faith in a brighter future for their nation. He spoke of the new sense of self-worth that the war has instilled among Ukrainians, emphasising their resilience and determination.

The President also addressed the ongoing conflict, mentioning daily air strikes by Russia against civilian facilities. He highlighted Ukraine's efforts to defend its territory, including attacks on fuel depots and military airfields deep within Russia.

Reports suggest that Ukraine has intensified its own drone production program, with more than ten drones reportedly shot down over the port in Ust-Luga. The debris from the shot-down drones is said to have caused a fire at a terminal of the Kremlin-linked oil and gas producer Novatek in Ust-Luga, Russia.

Governor Vyacheslav Fedorischev confirmed the attack but did not provide any details about the damage. According to the power plant management, the explosion of a downed drone damaged a transformer for the power supply of the power plant in Kursk, reducing the output of one block by half.

Firefighting efforts are underway in Ust-Luga, as stated by the governor of the region, Alexander Drosdenko. The Russian military claims to have shot down 95 Ukrainian combat drones, while the Ukrainian air defense reports 75 drones and one missile used by Russia for the attack.

International support for Ukraine's security and sovereignty remains strong. The "Coalition of the Willing" includes the United States, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. These countries have emphasised active roles in strengthening Ukraine's security and sovereignty.
