Pat O'Mahony, the former chairman of the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa), has been laid to rest in Abbey Cemetery, Ardfert. O'Mahony served as the head of Hiqa from October 2018 until his untimely death.
Born in a private veterinary practice, O'Mahony's career spanned various roles in both the public and private sectors. He made significant contributions to food safety, the Health Products Regulatory Authority, and Hiqa.
O'Mahony's professional journey took a turn when he bought his uncle's house in Banemore, marking a transition from "city mouse to country mouse." His meticulous nature was well-known, as recounted by his sister, making every project he undertook, including the renovation of his house, a testament to his dedication and attention to detail.
In his personal life, O'Mahony took great joy in reconnecting with his nieces and nephews and looked forward to strengthening those relationships. He is survived by his brother John, sisters Helen, Mary, and Bernadette, his brother-in-law Peter, and sister-in-law Maureen.
O'Mahony's deep and abiding faith helped him through difficult times, and it was evident in the way he lived his life. Fr Tadhg Fitzgerald noted that the gathering was in a state of shock at O'Mahony's death but also to celebrate his life.
Bernadette O'Mahony, in her eulogy, described her brother as a "high-achieving middle child." A family picture from O'Mahony's childhood showing him with his pet dog Spot was also presented. Flowers from O'Mahony's garden were presented to symbolise his pride in its growth.
O'Mahony's life was not just about work. He had a deep love for his pets, with his last dog, Hope, passing away just over a year ago. A picture of Margaret and Hope, two of O'Mahony's loves, was presented as a symbol of his life.
O'Mahony's successor as chairman of the board of Hiqa after his death was Tom Ryan. In his eulogy, it was noted that O'Mahony believed he would be reunited with his late wife, Margaret, after his death.
The gathering at O'Mahony's funeral was a celebration of a life well-lived, filled with achievements, love, and faith. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
