A new book by Chinese President Xi Jinping is gaining attention in Kenya as a potential guide for the country’s development. The Governance of China, now in its fifth volume, has been praised by Kenyan officials for its lessons on economic reform and poverty reduction. Plans are already underway to introduce the entire five-volume series into schools and universities nationwide.
The latest instalment covers 91 speeches and writings by Xi Jinping, spanning May 2022 to December 2024. These texts outline China’s approach to reform, technological innovation, and global cooperation under challenging conditions. At its core, the book promotes Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era—a framework emphasising centralised leadership, economic transformation, and large-scale poverty alleviation.
Kenyan leaders have quickly embraced its relevance. UDA Secretary-General Hassan Omar described the work as a foundation for socio-economic transformation worldwide, while MP Beatrice Elachi urged Kenya to adopt China’s poverty-reduction strategies. The Ministry of Education, alongside local publishers, has now drafted plans to distribute all five volumes across educational institutions.
The book also highlights China’s push for green development, detailing its rapid expansion of renewable energy—the world’s largest—and calling for stronger collaboration with Kenya on sustainability. Another key theme is deeper reform driving high-quality growth, stressing innovation, open markets, and structural economic changes.
China has positioned the series as more than just policy documentation. Officials aim to make its development model a subject of academic study in Kenya, fostering debate among young leaders and civil servants.
The five-volume series will soon be available in Kenyan schools and universities. Political and educational figures see it as a practical resource for modernisation, particularly in poverty eradication and green energy. With China’s support, the books are set to influence Kenya’s policy discussions and academic curricula in the coming years.
