In a groundbreaking development, Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI has announced the launch of au Starlink Direct, a revolutionary direct satellite-to-smartphone service. This service, a global first for mobile connectivity in areas with no cellular coverage, marks a significant step towards KDDI's vision of "Connecting the Unconnected. Wherever you see the sky."

The service, designed to supplement KDDI's existing 5G and 4G LTE services, operates through Starlink Direct to Cell satellites, which function like a cellphone tower in space. These satellites are developed by SpaceX and its subsidiary Starlink Services, LLC, with T-Mobile US also partnering with SpaceX to add satellite cellular service capability.

The first wave of supported apps includes Google Maps, Weathernews, NERV Disaster Prevention, YAMAP, and X. These apps are particularly useful in remote or off-grid environments, where traditional cellular coverage may be lacking. Initial support is available for the Google Pixel 10 series and Galaxy Z Fold7 / Flip7. Plans exist to expand support to more devices in the future.

With the integration of au Starlink Direct, KDDI's network coverage effectively extends to all of Japan. This service is designed for areas with no cellular coverage, making it an invaluable tool for those living or working in remote locations. Users can now access essential apps directly via satellite, a feature that could significantly improve communication and safety in these areas.

This launch reinforces KDDI's commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring everyone has access to essential mobile services, regardless of their location. It represents a significant milestone in the company's journey towards a more connected Japan.

This global first for mobile connectivity is set to transform the way people communicate in remote areas. With au Starlink Direct, KDDI is taking a significant step towards its vision of connecting everyone, everywhere.
