Kazakhstan ecology officials face penalties over falsified environmental records

An investigation by the Atyrau Region's Environmental Protection Prosecutor's Office has exposed legal breaches within the local ecology department. Staff members were found to have mishandled official records, leading to disciplinary action against several employees. One civil servant was also removed from their post for unrelated misconduct.

The probe revealed multiple failures in reporting and record-keeping. Some employees did not submit required statistics on time, while others concealed or falsified data. These actions violated administrative rules under Article 498 of Kazakhstan's Code of Administrative Offenses.

As a result, the deputy head of the ecology department and seven senior specialists faced administrative penalties. Separately, one civil servant was dismissed after being caught participating in gamblingβ€”a prohibited activity for government workers. The prosecutor's office did not disclose whether similar reviews had been conducted across other state agencies in the past two years.

The case highlights ongoing enforcement of administrative regulations in Atyrau's environmental sector. Eight officials now face consequences for their roles in reporting violations. Meanwhile, the dismissed employee's gambling offence reinforces restrictions on civil servant conduct.
