Kazakhstan Dominates Historic Unified World Boxing Championships
Scandal Rocks Tournament Opening: French Women's Team and Other Athletes Barred Over Late Genetic Testing
A major controversy erupted at the start of the championship when the French women's boxing team and several other female athletes were disqualified for failing to submit mandatory gender verification genetic test results by the deadline. World Boxing (WB) had made these tests compulsory for all women's divisions.
What Is World Boxing, and How Is This World Championship Different?
- World Boxing is a new international federation formed as an alternative to the International Boxing Association (IBA) after the IBA lost IOC recognition due to governance and judging scandals. In 2025, WB secured provisional IOC recognition and is preparing the Olympic qualification system for Los Angeles 2028.
- For the first time, men and women competed in a single World Championship rather than separate tournaments.
- Dates and venue: September 4–14, 2025, Liverpool, UK (M&S Bank Arena / Liverpool Arena). Official tournament website: worldboxingliverpool.com.
Participants and Geography
The championship featured 68 national teams and over 540 boxers. Full brackets and session results were published on the event's official website and Olympics.com.
Gender Policy and Disqualifications
Ahead of the tournament, WB introduced mandatory genetic testing (PCR and other Y-chromosome detection methods) for all female competitors. Due to missed deadlines, five French boxers and several other athletes were barred from competing. The French Boxing Federation condemned the decision as a "profound injustice."
Key Sporting Results
- Kazakhstan dominated the medal table with 7 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes, clinching the top spot. The decisive gold went to superstar Aibek Oralbay, who defeated Jakhongir Zakirov (Uzbekistan) in the tournament's final bout—the 520th fight of the championship.
- Uzbekistan finished second with 6 golds, 2 silvers, and 3 bronzes, excelling in middleweight and heavyweight divisions.
- India secured 2 golds (including one in the women's category), while Poland, Brazil, Australia, Ireland, and Taiwan each won one gold. Host nation England left without gold but earned 5 medals.

Why Russia's Team Did Not Compete
- World Boxing Membership The Russian Boxing Federation is not a member of World Boxing (WB). WB has been steadily expanding its membership—expected to reach over 100–120 federations by autumn—while emphasizing that Russia, one of the largest Olympic boxing nations, remains absent. As a result, Russian athletes are barred from WB-sanctioned events, including the 2025 World Championships.
- Olympic Implications The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has aligned its qualification process with WB's structure. For athletes to compete at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, their national federations must be WB members. Russia remains under the International Boxing Association (IBA), which does not grant access to WB-organized tournaments.
Key Fights and Liverpool's Standout Athletes
- Super Heavyweight (+92 kg): Aibek Oralbay vs. Jahongir Zakirov (final bout, securing Kazakhstan's decisive gold in the tournament's 520th fight).
- Women's 75 kg: Aoife O'Rourke—Ireland's historic gold medalist.
Tournament Schedule and Format
- September 4–10: Preliminary rounds (day and evening sessions).
- September 12–13: Semifinals.
- September 13–14: Finals (some finals held on the 13th, with the "gold medal showdown" on the 14th).
What This Means for Russian Fans and Boxers
As long as the Russian Boxing Federation (RBF) remains outside WB, Russian athletes will be excluded from all WB-sanctioned competitions—including future World Championships and Olympic qualifiers. To regain access to the "Olympic pathway," Russia would need to either: - Join World Boxing through an institutional decision, or - Secure special admission formats, if developed by WB and the IOC.
