Kazakhstan accelerates transport upgrades to become a global trade hub

Kazakhstan is pushing ahead with major upgrades to its transport and logistics systems. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has outlined plans to boost transit capacity, modernise infrastructure, and streamline border operations. The government aims to strengthen the country's role as a key trade corridor between Asia and Europe. A central focus is the expansion of air cargo transport. Authorities plan to establish a National Cargo Carrier, bringing in major international partners to support the project. This move comes alongside broader efforts to improve efficiency across all transport modes.

The Ministry of Transport has received clear instructions to speed up critical road projects. These include the Bakhty–Ayagoz, Kyzylzhar–Moyynty, and Darbaza–Makhtaaral routes, as well as wider highway repairs. Particular attention is being given to the Saksaul–Beineu corridor, which will cut transit times between China and Europe.

Border crossings are also set for upgrades. Eight checkpoints along the Eurasian Economic Union's external border will be modernised by the end of the year. Additionally, the government has ordered improvements to services for truckers at these locations.

Digital reforms are underway, too. By the end of October, the Ministry of Transport, alongside the Ministries of Finance and Digital Development, must launch the Smart Cargo system. This unified platform will simplify customs and logistics procedures.

Further measures include a new tariff policy for all transport modes, designed to increase competitiveness. The Ministry of Transport must also submit a special programme within two months to boost container shipping and develop multimodal routes. The government's push for transport upgrades covers roads, air freight, and digital systems. Modernised checkpoints, faster customs processes, and new trade routes aim to strengthen Kazakhstan's position as a global transit hub. Implementation deadlines have been set for key projects, with progress expected in the coming months.
