Kangaroo Caretaker Kerstin at the Bird Park, Alongside Her joey
In Solingen Bird and Animal Park, a little kangaroo boy has recently made a big move to another zoo. Born to the experienced mother, Kerstin, about a year and a half ago, the little one has grown up under her expert care.
Kerstin, known for her prowess in motherhood, gave birth to a healthy red-necked wallaby boy. The little one has now left the comfort of the pouch and is fully independent.
Kangaroos and their smaller counterparts, wallabies, are fascinating creatures. They are strict vegetarians, feeding primarily on grasses, herbs, fruit, and vegetables. Visitors to the park can get up close and personal with Kerstin and her protΓ©gΓ©, learning more about these intriguing animals.
The keepers at the park ensure the kangaroos' food is carefully prepared, removing shells from fruits and ensuring it's soft and free of injuries. Hygiene is of utmost importance in the care of kangaroos, as ingested injuries can quickly lead to necrobacillosis, a disease with no effective treatment, often resulting in death.
Kangaroos are known for their impressive jumps, capable of leaping up to 2.5 times their body size. These powerful leaps are a spectacle to behold, whether it's the giant kangaroos engaging in boxing matches or the lighter scuffles of wallabies.
However, kangaroos are sensitive to stress and overcrowding, preferring a safe, comfortable environment. To avoid potential disagreements with an adult male, the little kangaroo boy was relocated to another zoo.
Solingen Bird and Animal Park's kangaroos are a popular attraction and contribute to the preservation of the red-necked wallaby species. In the park, the kangaroos are also fed with moor grass that grows on the premises.
Kangaroos are solitary animals and live happily in small groups. Despite their preference for familiar surroundings, the little kangaroo boy's move is a testament to the park's commitment to the well-being of its animals and the future of the species.
