Jutta Leerdam claims Olympic gold in dramatic 500m speed skating showdown

Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam has won the gold price in the women's 500m at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Her victory came after breaking an Olympic record and overcoming weeks of media scrutiny. The event saw two Olympic records fall as Dutch skaters secured a one-two finish on the ice.

Leerdam arrived in Milan under controversy after flying in by private jet, separate from her teammates. Her decision to avoid print interviews before the 1,000m race added to the tension. Dutch media had criticised her for distancing herself from the team, and the scrutiny only grew as the Games progressed.

On the track, the Milano Speed Skating Stadium's sharp bends drew comparisons to the famous 'Dutch Corner' of Alpe d'Huez. In the 500m, Femke Kok set a new Olympic record in heat 13, only for Leerdam to surpass it in the final pair. Her time was 0.028 seconds faster, securing her the gold price.

Leerdam's public profile has risen sharply in recent years. She won silver in the 500m at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and gained further attention after her 2019 engagement to American influencer Jake Paul, who has 50 million subscribers across his platforms. Paul recently had a public exchange with freestyler Hunter Hess on social media, keeping him in the headlines.

Despite her success, Leerdam initially refused to speak to reporters after the race. Pressure from the Dutch media eventually led her to face the press, though relations remained strained.

The 500m final delivered a historic result for the Netherlands, with two Olympic records broken in a single event. Leerdam's gold price and Kok's silver ensured a Dutch one-two finish, capping a dramatic day on the ice. The victory, however, did little to ease the ongoing friction between Leerdam and the media back home.
