Jumbo Supermarkt debuts frying oil bottles with 30% recycled plastic
A new partnership between Verpact, Jumbo Supermarkt and Oiltrade has led to the first frying oil bottles made with 30% recycled plastic. These bottles are now heading to supermarket shelves. The move marks a step forward in making packaging more sustainable while cutting carbon emissions. Verpact’s Circular Plastic Bank connected Jumbo’s demand for greener packaging with Oiltrade’s technical expertise. The producer specialises in frying oil and packaging, ensuring the recycled material met food-safety standards. This collaboration addressed key challenges, such as unreliable recyclate sources and inconsistent quality.
The first 3-litre bottles containing 30% recycled plastic have already been produced. Each kilogram of recycled plastic used reduces CO₂ emissions by 2.5 kilograms. Jumbo aims to expand this approach, increasing the share of recycled material in future batches.
The initiative aligns with the broader Delta Plan, which tackles obstacles like weak supply chain links and competition from cheap overseas imports. Tariff incentives also encourage businesses to adopt recycled plastics. Further innovation programmes will deepen understanding of how to scale up recycled plastic use effectively. The new bottles are now available in Jumbo Supermarkt stores. By using recycled plastic, the retailer expects to lower its environmental impact significantly. Future phases will focus on refining processes and expanding the use of recyclate in more products.
