In a shocking turn of events, a Rewe supermarket in the southern Baden-Württemberg town of Lauchringen experienced a roof collapse on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred near the city of Waldshut-Tiengen, close to the Swiss border.

According to Mike König, deputy commander of the Lauchringen fire department, the incident unfolded in a matter of seconds. Rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the scene, using thermal imaging cameras to search for casualties buried under the rubble.

At the time of the collapse, approximately 26 people were in the store. Fortunately, no severely injured individuals required transportation by rescue helicopter. However, the incident resulted in four injuries, two of which were severe.

The volunteer firefighters estimate the damage to the building alone amounts to millions. The supermarket, which had recently undergone renovation and reopened in mid-August, was evacuated by the rescue teams.

The specific construction works carried out and whether work was done on the roof remain unclear. The responsible party for the work has not been explicitly named in available reports. It is worth noting that the recent renovation works were confined to the interior fittings; the roof and the building structure were not part of the renovation.

The police have secured the building and cordoned it off. The fire department previously turned off the electricity, water, and gas. The solar panel on the roof had to be made safe by turning off the power.

Among the fallen debris, inflated balloons and a mirror were found. No statement from the trading company Rewe was made by late evening. Investigators are likely to deploy an expert to determine the cause of the collapse.

The goods, especially the chilled and frozen ones, are at risk of spoiling. The collapse occurred at a time when the goods were stocked, increasing the urgency to locate any trapped individuals and clear the debris.

As rescue efforts continue, the community and emergency services remain vigilant, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this unfortunate incident.
