Dr. Jeffrey Timmermans: A Lifelong Devotion to Journalism

Dr. Jeffrey Timmermans, a seasoned financial journalist and journalism educator with over two decades of experience, has had a remarkable career that began in Japan in 1991.

Growing up in New York City, Timmermans developed a passion for reading newspapers, particularly the Wall Street Journal. This passion led him to intern for The Wall Street Journal in Tokyo, an experience he found both challenging and competitive.

Leaving his internship was bittersweet for Timmermans, but his next job at the Dow Jones Newswires was an environment that suited his personality more, and he absolutely loved it. This was just the beginning of his journey in Japan, as he went on to help produce a monthly Japanese-language newspaper.

Timmermans' academic journey began at Colgate University, where he earned a bachelor's degree with honours in Asian Studies. He later pursued his Ph.D. in Journalism, but there is no information available about the university where he earned this degree.

In 2016, after earning his Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong, Timmermans became the director of the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Reynolds Center offers a variety of resources and tools to journalists within the business journalism industry, and Timmermans has expanded its focus to training students and young journalists.

Under Timmermans' leadership, the Reynolds Center has practiced student involvement in its management and has produced podcast episodes such as "We Mean Business." Timmermans also developed a comprehensive postgraduate business-journalism curriculum widely considered the best in Asia.

Timmermans hopes that the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism will continue to adapt and evolve with the journalism industry, particularly in regard to new technology and tools. He advocates for every journalist to work for a newswire at least once within their career and for future journalists to take advantage of opportunities whenever and wherever they come up.

The Reynolds Center for Business Journalism also aims to advocate for more young and diverse reporters to develop an interest in business journalism. Timmermans found a lifelong mentor in his Japanese professor during his time at Colgate University, and he hopes to inspire similar relationships in the future.

In summary, Dr. Jeffrey Timmermans' career in journalism spans over two decades, starting in Japan and expanding to various roles in education and industry. His passion for journalism, particularly business journalism, is evident in his work at the Reynolds Center for Business Journalism, where he continues to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists.
