Josef Newgarden clinches victory at his home racetrack, securing his first win for the IndyCar season.
In a thrilling turn of events at the Nashville Superspeedway, Josef Newgarden secured his first victory of the IndyCar season. The win was a much-needed boost for the driver, who had only two podium finishes through 16 races and entered the race 16th in the standings.
Pole-sitter Pato O'Ward led the race for a significant portion, but his hopes for a third victory were dashed when he crashed while leading, causing a tire failure. O'Ward's teammate, Alex Palou, also experienced a tire failure during the race.
Scott McLaughlin, Newgarden's teammate, found himself in a challenging position after the restart. Despite not seeming to have any damage to his car, he wasn't able to challenge Newgarden. A crucial moment came when McLaughlin slid up the track and brushed the wall, allowing Newgarden to pass him.
The race was not without its share of drama. David Malukas, who is expected to replace Will Power at Team Penske starting in the 2026 season, crashed 83 laps into the race. Malukas was helicoptered out for further medical evaluation, but reports later confirmed that he was awake and alert. His crash required repair work to the barrier he hit.
Malukas' crash occurred while he was racing Louis Foster. Meanwhile, O'Ward had already locked up second in the championship standings. The driver had expressed concerns about the durability of Firestones throughout the weekend at Nashville Superspeedway.
Newgarden's win prevented him from going winless for the first time since 2014. Interestingly, the last nine wins of Newgarden's career are all on ovals, and Sunday's win moved him from 16th to 12th in the final season standings.
Elsewhere in motorsport, McLaren Racing was aiming for a historic sweep of the day, with Oscar Piastri leading the Dutch Grand Prix in Formula 1. However, the team fell short, with Piastri ultimately finishing second. Winning both the IndyCar and Formula 1 races on the same day would have been the first time in 49 years for McLaren.
As the IndyCar season continues, Newgarden will look to build on his victory and climb further up the standings. The next race is scheduled for Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
