Fox News Anchor John Roberts Battles Severe Case of Malaria
John Roberts, a veteran anchor at Fox News, is currently fighting a severe case of malaria. Initially, Roberts thought his symptoms were just muscle cramps and aches, but he began to suspect he had the flu when he started shivering uncontrollably.
Roberts expressed that his malaria felt "severe," and after a visit to a rheumatologist, his low platelets and white blood cells were discovered. This led him to the emergency room for a diagnosis, which was confirmed on Monday.
Roberts is the only known case of malaria his current doctor has seen, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the disease can be life-threatening if not quickly diagnosed and appropriately treated.
Approximately 2,000 cases of malaria are diagnosed each year in the U.S., according to the CDC. Despite initially thinking his diagnosis was excessive, Roberts acknowledged the potential danger of the disease if left untreated.
Roberts thanked Trace Gallagher for filling in for him on air while he seeks treatment. The Fox News network has not provided any further updates on Roberts' condition.
The CDC advises travellers to take precautions to prevent malaria, especially if they are travelling to areas where the disease is common. This includes taking antimalarial medication and using insect repellent and bed nets.
Malaria is a serious disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly. We wish John Roberts a speedy and full recovery.
