In the past week, several companies in the logistics and supply chain sectors have announced job cuts and plant closures, affecting hundreds of workers across various regions.

J.B. Hunt has decided to close a distribution center in Lithonia, Georgia, eliminating 70 positions. Meanwhile, API Logistics Warehouse Management Services will be cutting 118 jobs in Lithia Springs after losing a major client.

In Georgia, International Paper has been the most affected, with the company announcing the permanent closure of its Savannah and Riceboro containerboard mills and related operations by the end of September, resulting in approximately 1,100 job losses. This follows the company's earlier announcement of eliminating 1,093 positions in Georgia.

Hormel Foods is also set to end bacon production at its Tucker, Georgia plant, leading to 135 job losses. DP World is shutting a facility in Michigan, resulting in the layoff of 70 workers.

On a positive note, the state of Georgia is collaborating on supply chain and logistics management degree programs among its colleges, aiming to foster growth and development in the sector.

Elsewhere, the IndexBox Market Intelligence Platform shows a year-over-year decline in production output for certain packaging materials, which could potentially impact the industry further.
