January’s Best Seasonal Produce: Citrus, Roots and Winter Greens Shine

January brings a rich selection of seasonal produce to markets across the UK. From vibrant citrus fruits to hearty root vegetables, the month offers a diverse range of fresh ingredients for winter cooking.

Many of these fruits and vegetables are grown in the US, with key regions like California, Florida, Oregon, and Washington supplying much of the winter harvest.

Citrus fruits take centre stage this month. Varieties such as Kishu mandarins, Kumquats, Meyer lemons, Pomelos, and Sumo Citrus are at their peak. California led production of most of these in 2022, while Florida dominated in Kumquats and Pomelos.

Exotic fruits like lychee, Shingo pears, and jackfruit also reach their best quality in January. For those who prefer more familiar flavours, apples and pears remain abundant. Comice pears, Cosmic Crisp apples, and Lucy Glo apples—primarily grown in Oregon and Washington—stay flavourful throughout the month. Winter squash varieties, including delicata, honeynut, kabocha, and red kuri, remain widely available until March. These versatile vegetables store well and add depth to soups and roasts. Leafy brassicas thrive in the cold. Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale are all at their best, offering nutritious options for winter meals. Chicories, such as Belgian endive, radicchio, and castelfranco radicchio, also shine this season, perfect for salads or braised dishes. Root vegetables like celeriac, beets, turnips, and rutabaga are plentiful and keep well in storage. Specialty radishes add a peppery crunch to winter plates. Fresh turmeric and ginger root are also in season, ideal for adding warmth to teas, curries, and baked goods. Potatoes come in a wide range of varieties, from mixed baby and purple to fingerlings and other specialty types. Florida strawberries and California kiwis round out the month’s offerings, providing a sweet contrast to the season’s heartier produce.

The variety of January’s harvest ensures plenty of options for seasonal eating. Citrus, root vegetables, and winter greens dominate, while exotic and familiar fruits add brightness to winter menus. Markets will continue to stock these ingredients well into early spring.
