James Timpson OBE, CEO of Timpson Group and newly appointed Minister of State for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, returned to Durham University this week. He received an honorary Doctor of Science degree, marking his long-standing connection to the institution where he studied Geography from 1991 to 1994. During his visit, Timpson toured his former college, Hatfield, and met with the Head of Geography and the Principal. His family ties to Durham run deepβhis wife, Roisin, graduated with an Anthropology degree from Trevelyan College between 1992 and 1995. She missed her own graduation due to a family bereavement and was visibly emotional during the honorary ceremony.
Timpson's brother, Edward, also studied at Durham, completing a Politics degree at Hatfield College from 1993 to 1996. The family's latest graduate is Timpson's daughter, Niamh, who earned an Anthropology degree from Hatfield College in 2023. Beyond his academic links, Timpson is widely recognised for his work in prison reform. Through the Timpson Group, he employs more ex-offenders than any other UK businessβone in nine of his staff has a criminal record. His appointment as a government minister further strengthens his role in shaping policies around rehabilitation and reducing reoffending.
The honorary degree highlights Timpson's contributions to both business and criminal justice reform. His ongoing commitment to supporting ex-offenders aligns with his new ministerial responsibilities. The visit also underscored the lasting bond between his family and Durham University.
