James Ellis Heustess, satellite communications pioneer, dies at 83

James Ellis Heustess, known to many as Ellis, passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Clarkton, North Carolina, on June 10, 1942, he built a long career in electronics and satellite communications while maintaining a passion for gardening and amateur radio. Ellis grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Whiteville High School in 1960. Three years later, he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics Engineering Technology. That same year, he began his 41-year career at Sandia Corporation, now Sandia National Laboratories.

His work focused on security and communications. In the 1980s, he contributed to projects that strengthened critical systems against real-world threats. By the 1990s, he led a $5 million government programme aimed at combining GPS tracking with satellite communications. While no evidence links him to the development of NAVSTAR GPS—launched by the US Department of Defense—his projects aligned with the era's advancements in military and civilian navigation. Outside work, Ellis was a lifelong ham radio operator, first licensed as KN4JDC at 17. He held an advanced licence until his death. After retiring in 2004 as a Principal Member of the Technical Staff, he devoted time to gardening, growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and aubergines, often sharing his harvest with neighbours. In his personal life, he married Donna Eidson in 1963, and they had a daughter, Lori Heustess. Later, in 2016, he wed Marcia Salazar.

Ellis left behind a legacy in satellite communications and a reputation for generosity in his community. His career spanned decades of technological change, from Cold War-era security projects to modern GPS applications. Friends and family remember him for his technical expertise and his love of gardening.
