Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu Presents John Fetterman with a Silver-Plated Pager as a Grim Token of Appreciation
In a shocking turn of events, a terror attack orchestrated by Israel using pagers rigged with explosives has been denounced by a group of UN experts as a violation of international law.
The attack, which targeted thousands of Hezbollah members in Lebanon late last year, resulted in at least 42 deaths, including an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old, and injured about 3,250 more, including 200 critically.
The UN experts, including human rights and international law specialists, declared in 2023 that the attack may constitute violations of international humanitarian law. They pointed out that such a large-scale attack against thousands of devices without knowing who was actually holding the devices was a terrible violation of international laws.
Israel sold the pagers to Hezbollah without any indication they were behind the deal. The group of experts issued a statement denouncing Israel's attacks, stating they violate the human right to life. They called for prompt, independent investigation to establish the truth and enable accountability for the crime of murder.
The silver-plated pager, allegedly a reference to the terror attack, was presented by Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to Sen. John Fetterman on Wednesday. Netanyahu described the device as one that changed history. Sen. Fetterman expressed gratitude for the gift, stating that he was fond of the story when it broke and was now thankful for the silver-plated pager.
Defenders of Israel's attacks suggested that everyone who was killed or injured deserved it. However, the experts concluded that such attacks could constitute war crimes of murder, attacking civilians, and launching indiscriminate attacks.
In a separate incident, Netanyahu gave President Donald Trump two commemorative pagers in February, one gold and another described as "normal." Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch, was pictured near one of the pagers in the Oval Office shortly after it was given to Trump.
The UN experts noted that at the time of the attacks, there was no way of knowing who possessed each device and who was nearby, making the attacks even more dangerous and inhumane. The attacks violate the right to life by failing to verify each target and distinguish between protected civilians and those who could potentially be attacked for taking a direct part in hostilities.
