Israel's acquisition of F-35 parts from the UK undermines aid to Gaza, claims a surgeon at a tribunal
In a significant development, a tribunal chaired by Jeremy Corbyn MP is currently examining allegations of genocide, war crimes, and the UK's involvement in atrocities committed in Gaza. The tribunal, which aims to shed light on these contentious issues, was opened by Corbyn with a call for truth and transparency.
Dr. Victoria Rose, a consultant plastic surgeon at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, is one of the key witnesses testifying at the tribunal. Rose, who has worked extensively treating people in Gaza, has shared harrowing accounts of her experiences there. She testified about operating on children less than 10 years old without anesthetic and treating a 5-year-old who had her leg blown off, among other tragic cases.
Prof. Nick Maynard of Oxford University, another witness, has provided evidence of deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure by Israel. He has also asserted that he has seen first-hand the damage done by Israel in Gaza, especially to hospitals. Maynard believes the daily clustering of injuries to particular body parts in children and teenagers, which he has observed, is beyond coincidence and suggests target practice by Israeli soldiers.
Maynard's assertions are supported by the bullet-wound patterns in children and teenagers brought to hospitals, which suggest they were being targeted. This daily clustering of injuries is a grave concern, as food in Gaza is already scarce, according to Dr. Rose.
Israel's actions in Gaza have also been criticised for blocking access to the region for up to 90% of medics and confiscating supplies from medics given approval to enter Gaza. These actions have been condemned as hindrances to providing essential medical care to those in need.
The UK government's role in these events has been a matter of debate. The British government has not interrupted deliveries of parts for the F-35 jet program to Israel, as there has been no public announcement or policy decision to stop them. However, responsibility for continuing these deliveries lies primarily with the UK government coordinating with Lockheed Martin and allied defense commitments.
Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Territories, has accused UK government officials of potential responsibility for failing to end the occupation of Palestine. These allegations add another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
The tribunal aims to provide a platform for witnesses like Dr. Rose and Prof. Maynard to share their experiences and evidence, and to shed light on the complex and contentious issues surrounding the UK's involvement in Gaza. The truth, as Corbyn stated in his opening remarks, needs to be told, and information needs to be provided. The tribunal is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
