Israeli forces declare control over almost half of Gaza City in their offensive towards occupation
In a developing situation, Israeli forces have been advancing through the outer suburbs of Gaza City, with a focus on specific areas within the city. The operation, as stated by Brigadier General Effie Defrin, has so far targeted the Zeitoun and Sheikh Radwan neighborhoods.
The Israeli forces are a few kilometers from the city center of Gaza City, and according to Defrin, the operation is expected to expand and intensify in the coming days. This escalation comes after at least 53 people were killed in Gaza by Israeli fire on Thursday, with most deaths occurring in Gaza City.
The organization currently attempting to establish military control in Gaza City is the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas. The Israeli forces control 40% of Gaza City, and the operation aims to damage Hamas' infrastructure, as stated by Defrin.
Brigadier General Defrin reiterated that the Israeli operation's goal is to pursue Hamas everywhere. Defrin also stated that the mission will continue until Israel's remaining hostages are returned and Hamas' rule ends.
Far-right members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government have advocated for the imposition of military rule in Gaza and the establishment of settlements there. However, Netanyahu himself has ruled out these measures so far.
Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told cabinet ministers that without a day-after plan, military rule in Gaza might be imposed. This underscores the urgency and complexity of the situation.
Thousands of residents in Gaza City have defied Israeli orders to leave and remain behind in the ruins. This resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the people's determination to stay in their homes.
The situation in Gaza City remains fluid, with the Israeli forces continuing their advance. It is a critical time, and updates are expected in the coming days.
