Israel lambasts Ribera's latest comments on the alleged "genocide" in Gaza as intolerable

In a speech at Sciences Po in Paris on Thursday, September 5, 2025, Teresa Ribera, the European Commission's Executive Vice President for Green Deal, Climate and Competitiveness, addressed the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Ribera used the term "genocide" to describe the situation and emphasised Europe's inability to act and speak with one voice.

Her intervention at the School of International Affairs stirred controversy, with the Israeli government describing her statements as "totally unacceptable". Oren Marmorstein, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, accused Ribera of becoming "the mouthpiece of Hamas' propaganda" with "baseless accusations" against Israel. He urged Ribera to call for the release of all hostages and for Hamas to lay down its arms to end the conflict.

Ribera, however, lamented Europe's inability to speak with one voice about the situation in Gaza. She compared the situation in Gaza to Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine, testing Europe's resilience. Ribera warned that the increase in geopolitical tensions calls into question the ideals of peace, cooperation, and full respect for the rule of law, human rights, or the UN system.
