Visma's Vingegaard Takes Over Vuelta a Espana Lead

In a thrilling turn of events at the Vuelta a Espana, Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease A Bike has taken the lead after a successful first week of racing.

Vingegaard's victory was the result of a well-executed attack on stage 8, which saw him stay 24 seconds ahead of João Almeida and Tom Pidcock. This win marks Vingegaard's second stage victory of 2025 and the third of his career.

The attack came during a more aggressive strategy that replaced the conservative approach used in stages 6 and 7. Matteo Jorgenson guided Vingegaard into position for the move, which was initiated by the Dane himself. He felt good and saw an opportunity for a stage win, and the team did not disappoint.

Grischa Niermann, sports director of Visma-Lease A Bike, was surprised by Vingegaard's victory but agreed it was the way the team wanted to end the first week of racing. The team, visibly shivering due to heavy rain, shared hugs and grins at the success of Vingegaard's attack.

Felix Gall limited his losses to 1:02, while the bulk of the favorites came home much closer to two minutes back. This has brought the upper end of the Vuelta GC battle down to a fight between Vingegaard, Almeida, and Pidcock.

Vingegaard's victory has also seen him close the gap to the leader, Torsten Træen, with the Dane now just 37 seconds behind. Visma will not have the responsibility to control the race until Larra Belagua on Tuesday.

The team felt delight at Vingegaard's remarkable triumph, taking advantage of the situation initiated by Lidl-Trek and Q36.5. Vingegaard masterminded the move during the stage, and the team ensured that Træen remained in the lead for another day.

With Vingegaard considered the man to beat in the Vuelta GC battle, it promises to be an exciting race in the coming weeks.
