Ireland reunification efforts persist, according to the Commission.

In recent elections, the party advocating for Irish reunification in Northern Ireland is Sinn Féin, a pro-nationalist Irish party. Sinn Féin's leader, Mary Lou McDonald, has emphasized the importance of preparing for a potential referendum on Irish unity, with a target date set for 2030.

The Good Friday Agreement, signed in 1998, brought an end to the 30-year "Troubles" in Northern Ireland, which claimed over 3,500 lives. However, it is important to note that the Agreement did not necessarily bring peace to Northern Ireland, but only the absence of conflict. Despite this, the Agreement promised power-sharing and the prevention of a hard border within Ireland.

The question of Northern Ireland leaving Britain is gaining prominence. A recent poll indicates that only 34% of Northern Irish people would vote for reunification. However, the nationalists in Northern Ireland have not given up hope for a united Ireland.

Sinn Féin is bringing forward differentiated arguments for Irish reunification. They argue that a united Ireland would not face the complex trade situation that Northern Ireland currently experiences due to Brexit. Additionally, addressing the issue of Irish reunification and tackling societal issues like racism and violence can be done concurrently, according to Mary Lou McDonald.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill acknowledges the need for action against racism and misogyny. Shockingly, 98% of women in Northern Ireland have experienced some form of violence or abuse. Some gates in Belfast's peace walls still need to be closed overnight, and at unionist bonfires last weekend, effigies of migrant boats were burned among other things. Britain is currently debating how to address growing migration on the island.

The new Sinn Féin leadership is aware that Irish reunification cannot be achieved through violence. Mary Lou McDonald has demanded a popular vote for Irish reunification by 2030. Preparations for a potential referendum on Irish reunification are set to change, with Sinn Féin pushing for progress in this area.

In conclusion, the issue of Irish reunification remains a contentious one in Northern Ireland. While a poll indicates that only a third of Northern Irish people would vote for reunification, the nationalists have not given up hope. Sinn Féin, the pro-nationalist Irish party, continues to advocate for a referendum on Irish unity by 2030, and preparations for such a referendum are expected to change in the near future.
