Iranian Boxer Mobin Kahraze Fights for a New Life After Fleeing Political Pressure
Mobin Kahraze, a 32-year-old Iranian boxer, fled his home country in 2019 due to political pressures. After seeking asylum in Austria, he has rebuilt his life while pursuing a professional boxing career. His story reflects the struggles and determination of athletes who leave their homeland for safety and opportunity.
Kahraze left Iran seven years ago, leaving his family behind. Upon arrival in Austria, he spent two months in the Traiskirchen asylum centre before finding support from the Bounce Boxing Club. The club became a turning point, helping him regain stability and focus on his sport.
Before fleeing, he had already made a name for himself in Iran, winning the national championship in 2021. He turned professional the following year and has since maintained an undefeated record across 14 fights. His next challenge is a tune-up bout on March 21 in Vienna against Lithuanian Aliaksandr Dzemka, preparing him for a June 5 title fight for the vacant WBF belt.
Despite his success in the ring, daily life remains difficult. Kahraze struggles with language barriers, cultural adjustments, and finding steady work—particularly as an auto mechanic. Yet, his faith keeps him grounded, believing that 'God has a plan for me. Everything happens for a reason.' Boxing, he says, has given him peace and purpose, calling it 'everything to me.'
He now considers Austria his home and hopes to reunite with his family there someday. His refusal to abandon boxing for political reasons drove him to leave Iran, and now he aims to give back to the country that took him in.
Kahraze's journey highlights the resilience of athletes who flee political unrest. With a professional record still unblemished, he continues to train while navigating life as an asylum seeker. His upcoming fights mark another step toward securing his future—both in and out of the ring.
