Investigative Body has Launched Probe into Alleged Misconduct
In the heart of Austria, a new research institution has emerged, the Institute for Theoretical Physics. Established on August 1, 2025, this institution is dedicated to the study of theoretical aspects of quantum optics.
At the helm of this new institution is Klemens Hammerer, a renowned physicist who has made significant strides in the field. Hammerer's research focuses on quantum optics, quantum information, and precision measurement.
Hammerer's academic journey began at the University of Innsbruck, where he studied physics. After graduating with distinction, he moved to the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics in Munich as a doctoral student, working under the guidance of Ignacio Cirac.
Following his doctoral studies, Hammerer returned to Innsbruck, where he served as a university assistant in the group of Peter Zoller. In 2010, he moved to the Austrian Academy of Sciences Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) in Innsbruck as a senior scientist.
In 2025, Hammerer was appointed a professor at the University of Innsbruck, a role he still holds today. Additionally, he became a professor of theoretical physics at Leibniz University Hannover. Since 2025, he has been a professor of theoretical quantum optics at the University of Innsbruck and head of a research group at IQOQI Innsbruck.
Hammerer's research addresses fundamental questions about utilizing quantum resources in open systems and generating correlated many-body states for metrology, communication, and information processing. His work includes theoretical concepts for novel atomic clocks and quantum sensors using cold atoms and ions, the development of methods for spin squeezing and quantum correlations in ensembles of atoms or solid-state spins, and the study of quantum optical many-body systems in resonators and waveguides.
The Institute for Theoretical Physics, under Hammerer's leadership, promises to contribute significantly to the field of quantum optics, furthering our understanding of this fascinating realm and potentially paving the way for groundbreaking technologies.
