Investigation launched over Pennsylvania cleric suspected of manipulating lottery due to reported gambling issues

In a shocking turn of events, a Catholic priest in Erie, Pennsylvania has admitted to rigging a church raffle in December 2024. The investigation, initiated by the Erie County District Attorney's Office in March 2025, was prompted by the discovery of falsified raffle results.

The raffle, held to raise approximately $420,000 for St Jude's church, saw a total of 1,000 tickets available, each worth $50. The winner announced on Christmas Day was Martin Anderson, a resident of Detroit. However, investigations revealed that Anderson did not exist, and to date, no actual winner of the raffle has been identified.

The potential prize for the winners included a Chevy Corvette Stingray 1LT or $50,000 in cash. The investigation found transactions totaling $300,000 between the church's account and the pastor's American Express credit card between January 2024 and March 2025.

In addition to the raffle fraud, the church is now under investigation for the priest's gambling behavior and spending. The investigation aims to determine if the priest's actions contributed to the rigged raffle. The investigation has involved obtaining search warrants on St Jude's offices and the church.

The pastor has not yet faced any charges, and the church has transferred him out of the parish while the investigation is ongoing. The investigation is still active, and further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

It is important to note that at the time of writing, there are no publicly available or reported details concerning an investigation by the Erie County District Attorney's Office into this specific case or the accused priest's alleged gambling behavior or misuse of funds. For updates on this case, it would be advisable to check directly with official Erie County District Attorney communications or recent Pennsylvania news sources.
