Investigation launched into accused extortion attempt towards law enforcement officials, estimated at N3 million
In a shocking turn of events, the Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation into a case of alleged attempted extortion by officers from the Onikan Police Station Tactical Squad.
The incident, which occurred at about 1:00 a.m., on Thursday along Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, has been brought to light by Boluwatife, the complainant, who shared details of the incident on Twitter with the handle @Tife_badass.
According to the reports, Boluwatife was handcuffed, bundled into a hilux, and his friend was also taken. The officers allegedly demanded N3 million from him, a demand that was eventually settled for N500,000 after about two hours.
The officers are also accused of threatening to shoot Boluwatife multiple times, forging documents against him, and labeling him as a fraudulent cultist. When Boluwatife was given back his phone, he used it to alert his people.
The command's spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has reacted to the allegations on Twitter with the handle @benHundeyin. He confirmed that all the officers involved have been summoned to the command headquarters in Ikeja.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, to investigate the complaint. The command has ordered a full investigation into the matter, and the public will be updated on the outcome.
It is worth noting that the search results do not provide specific names of officers involved in a stated arrest and extortion activities. They mention arrests of suspects in various criminal contexts, but no details about officers implicated in such crimes.
This incident serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and professionalism within the ranks of the police force. The Lagos State Police Command has taken the first step towards addressing this issue, and we await the results of the investigation with hope for justice.
