Investigation into the former disgraced abbot Alongkot continues unabated

The financial transactions of the disgraced former abbot of Wat Phrabat Namphu, Phra Alongkot, and his assistant, Seksan Sapsubbsakul, are under investigation for the alleged embezzlement of over one billion baht in donations.

Authorities are examining the links to the remaining 900 billion baht and identifying related individuals and entities. Only about 100 million baht in the form of cheques were found in the former abbot's living quarters at the temple.

The investigation is ongoing, with the review of evidence including that seized during raids on Wat Phrabat Namphu and several other locations. The two suspects, Phra Alongkot and Seksan Sapsubbsakul, are currently detained at Bangkok Remand Prison.

Sources indicate that both suspects are cooperating with authorities. However, there is a high chance that authorities will freeze more assets linked to the former abbot as the investigation progresses. Delayed disclosure could be interpreted as an attempt to cover up evidence.

Allegations on social media suggest that several celebrities, including former monk and well-known preacher Sompong Nakhonthaisong, had borrowed funds from Mr Alongkot. Mr Sompong Nakhonthaisong has admitted to borrowing money from the former abbot but has repaid half of the amount owed.

Many of the donations were kept in the form of cash, despite the convenience of bank transfers. The Anti-Money Laundering Office is working to trace the rest of the donations. Anyone who holds temple-related assets on behalf of the former abbot is urged to come forward.

The health of the suspects is also a concern. Mr Alongkot's condition appears stable, while Mr Seksan is experiencing mild psychological stress. Both suspects are undergoing a five-day mandatory health quarantine due to pre-existing medical conditions.

Despite efforts to question the suspects, they have not yet been met by investigators. This could be a deliberate attempt to obscure the financial trail. The former abbot, who was formerly known as Phra Alongkot, and his aide, Seksan Sapsubbsakul, remain under investigation.
