Investigation into the former abbot Alongkot is still in progress
The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of over one billion baht in temple donations by the disgraced former abbot, Alongkot Phoolmook, and his aide, Seksan Sapsubbsakul, is ongoing.
The raid, which took place at Wat Phrabat Namphu and several other locations, revealed that only about 100 million baht in the form of cheques were found during the search at the former abbot's living quarters. Many of the donations, however, were kept in cash, which could be an attempt to obscure the financial trail.
The two suspects, Mr Alongkot and Mr Seksan, are currently detained at Bangkok Remand Prison. Both are undergoing a five-day mandatory health quarantine due to pre-existing medical conditions, with Mr Alongkot's condition reported as stable during the quarantine, while Mr Seksan is experiencing mild psychological stress.
Sources indicate that both suspects are cooperating with authorities. The Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) is working to trace the remaining donations and there is a high chance that authorities will freeze more assets linked to the former abbot as the investigation progresses.
Investigators have yet to meet with the former abbot and his aide. Delayed disclosure could be interpreted as an attempt to cover up evidence, but it is unclear at this stage whether this is the case.
Allegations on social media suggest that several celebrities, including former monk and well-known preacher Sompong Nakhonthaisong, had borrowed funds from Mr Alongkot. Mr Sompong Nakhonthaisong admitted on his Facebook page that he had borrowed money from the former abbot, but has repaid half of the amount owed. However, there is no verified public information about prominent personalities borrowing money from Phra Alongkot and failing to repay it according to social media claims.
Pol Col Anek urged anyone who holds temple-related assets on behalf of Mr Alongkot to come forward. The investigation is a significant development in Thailand's ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure transparency in religious institutions.
