In recent news, an intriguing international delegation visit to North Korea has caught the attention of the global community. The head of the delegation, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing from Myanmar, was accompanied by his North Korean counterpart.
The transportation for this high-profile delegation was a mix of vehicles. While the old stretched Benz S-class was used to transport the head of the delegation and his North Korean counterpart, at least three Shanghai-Volkswagen Passat Lingyu sedans were also part of the convoy. The North Korean military plates on these Passats featured a red star and a black number.
The mention of Shanghai-Volkswagen Passats in this context likely refers to the vehicles manufactured by SAIC Volkswagen, a Chinese automaker. However, the details about who provided these Passats to the North Korean government remain unclear. It is speculated that the Chinese government may have purchased and provided the Passats, but this has not been confirmed.
Interestingly, the Tesla plant in Shanghai has been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing lockdown, while SAIC Volkswagen seems to have managed to keep production going despite the challenging circumstances. Some workers at the factory are even reported to be sleeping there during the lockdown.
Meanwhile, in China, the Shanghai-Volkswagen Passat was recently spotted, but no new information about its location or use is available.
On a separate note, the Volkswagen ID.Aero, a new electric sedan, is set to be available first in China.
At the 2025 Greater Bay Auto Show, the Xiaomi YU7, Maextro S800, and Yangwang U8L were showcased, showcasing China's growing automotive industry.
The old stretched Benz S-class was seen on the far right of the picture, adding a touch of traditional luxury to this modern-day diplomatic event.
