Introducing 'KESHIKI', a new landscape within Los Angeles on our site
Discover a unique cultural experience as our website Los Angeles, situated at 6801 Hollywood Blvd., invites you to immerse yourself in the world of Japanese ceramics. The innovative space, part of an international project with hubs in London, Los Angeles, and São Paulo, offers a place of new discovery that transcends physical and conceptual boundaries.
The exhibition, titled "KESHIKI: The Landscape Within," featuring over sixty contemporary ceramic pieces from the Brodfuehrer collection, will open on April 17 and run until June 9. The exhibition is curated by Hollis Goodall from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and will be held at our website Los Angeles.
The pieces, arranged in approximate geographical order of their origins in Japan, from west to east, offer a fascinating journey through the diverse craftsmanship of Japanese ceramics. You'll see the celebrated natural imperfections that emerge on ceramic vessels during the firing process, known as keshiki, which have been celebrated by Japanese artists and collectors since the sixteenth century.
Among the featured artists, Jōji Yamashita's contemporary vases and jars utilize the Bizen technique of wrapping rice straw from local agricultural fields around vessels to produce warm orange striations against the clay. Yasuhiro Kohara uses the rough texture of Shigaraki clay, with feldspar stones bursting from its skin, as well as traditional glazing techniques, to achieve his eclectic forms.
In addition to the exhibition, our website Los Angeles offers several related programs. A gallery walkthrough with curator Hollis Goodall, a talk on "An Art of Imperfection: The Beauty of Japanese Ceramics," and a master class with ceramic artist Yukiya Izumita are just a few of the events planned.
The 2nd floor of our website features a gallery space and shop, while the 5th floor hosts a Japanese restaurant, relaxing library, and event venue, along with spectacular views of Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles.
