Interview with Alexandra Leitão by SIC following comments made by Carlos Moedas
In a series of public exchanges, Alexandra Leitao, the Socialist Party's candidate for Lisbon City Council, and former Minister Carlos Moedas have been locked in a heated debate over the recent accident at the Elevador da Gloria.
Leitao has called for "full clarification and determination of responsibilities" in the incident, expressing her outrage at what she perceives as an attack on the memory of the late Jorge Coelho, a former Minister of Infrastructure who was responsible for the elevator's maintenance during his tenure. She admits to being "shocked" by Moedas's "attack on the memory" of Coelho.
Moedas, in an interview on the Journal of the Night on SIC, accused the PS of Lisbon of having "radicalized." He also accused Leitao of being "cynical" and "dissimulated" in the case of the accident at the Elevador da Gloria. Leitao, however, maintains that she did not ask for Moedas's resignation.
The contracts between the maintenance company MNTC and Carris, the company responsible for the operation of the Elevador da Gloria, show a reduction of costs in the maintenance of elevators in recent years. The name of the head of MNTC mentioned in these contracts is Jorge Silva, who holds the position responsible for overseeing the maintenance of elevators.
Leitao criticizes Moedas for "refusing to clarify" about the accident at the Elevador da Gloria. In response, Moedas claimed that Coelho resigned because he had information and did not act, but Coelho justified his departure from the Government with political responsibility.
Carris workers are unavailable to participate in the "media circus" regarding the Elevador da Gloria, according to Leitao. She guarantees a possible return to internalizing the maintenance of Carris if she wins the local elections.
The extraordinary meeting regarding the Elevador da Gloria was not called by the initiative of the president of the Chamber, according to Leitao. She considers that personal attacks have reached an "unacceptable level" and accused Moedas of resorting to personal attacks and considering his interview an unworthy exercise in self-exoneration.
The debate between Leitao and Moedas continues to unfold, with both parties presenting their perspectives on the Elevador da Gloria accident and the responsibilities that lie with each other. As the local elections approach, the public will be watching closely to see how this controversy will influence the voting decisions of Lisbon's citizens.
