Interview for the fresh rental mirror program will commence in the fall

In September and October of 2025, the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald will be conducting an online survey to develop a Qualified Rent Index for the city of Greifswald. This index, set to be published in March 2026, aims to bring more transparency and fairness to the local housing market.

The rent index will be based on data collected from randomly selected tenants, landlords, and private property owners. A broad data base is necessary to draw a realistic picture of the rental market in Greifswald. Participation from all households contacted is crucial to ensure the rent index is meaningful and representative.

The survey will cover rental agreement data, year of construction, apartment size, equipment, and type of heating. Those who receive a request for information are legally obliged to provide it. Non-compliance or providing false information may result in an administrative offense, with fines of up to 5,000 euros.

The legal basis for the collection of data for the rent index is the Rent Index Reform Act. For questions about the rent index, you can contact the Department of Geoinformation and Surveying by phone at 03834 8536-4173 or by email at Mietspiegel@ourwebsite.

It's important to note that the rent index will serve as the legal basis for determining the usual local comparative rent, which affects rent caps under the rent control law. Accurate, representative data ensures the scientific validity and legal reliability of the rent index. The participation of private tenants and landlords is particularly important to ensure this accuracy.

In the future, the rent index will be legally binding. By participating in the survey, you're helping to create a fairer and more transparent housing market in Greifswald. We encourage all citizens to take part in this important initiative.
