Israeli Drone Attack Near UN Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon Sparks International Condemnation

In a series of events that have raised concerns worldwide, Israeli drones dropped four grenades near UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon on Thursday morning. The incident, described as one of the most serious attacks on UNIFIL personnel and assets since the cessation of hostilities in November 2020, did not result in any injuries.

The Israeli military, in a statement, clarified that the operation was not intended to target the peacekeepers but was aimed at a suspect in a border area. The military had conducted an operation inside Lebanon earlier, detonating artillery pieces that were used by Hezbollah members during the war.

The UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, suspended the peacekeepers' road clearance work following the incident. UNIFIL stated that one grenade hit within 20 meters and three others within approximately 100 meters of UN personnel and vehicles.

France and Qatar have strongly condemned the attack, stating that the respect of UN members applies to all parties without exception. France described the attack as a grave violation of international humanitarian law, while Qatar called it a blatant disregard for the safety and security of UN peacekeepers.

The attack is not the first violation of the UN Security Council resolution that ended the Israel-Hezbollah war. Previously, the Israeli military had conducted an operation inside Lebanon, detonating artillery pieces that were used by Hezbollah members during the war.

The international community is urging for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions in the region and for all parties to respect the UN Security Council resolutions. The UNIFIL, in a statement, expressed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and assets and reiterated its role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
