International Community Urges U.S. to Reverse Visa Restrictions against Palestinians

In a significant development, several states, including France, Canada, and Australia, have announced their intention to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. This move comes as the US has imposed visa sanctions against representatives of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

The US State Department has imposed these sanctions on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and numerous other individuals, as well as the PLO. However, it's important to note that these visa sanctions do not affect the official Palestinian Authority representation at the United Nations, which has only observer status and is not a full UN member.

The visa sanctions could potentially prevent the affected individuals from attending the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York. This has sparked concern and criticism from the EU, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urging a reconsideration of the US visa sanctions.

The EU foreign ministers recently met in Copenhagen, Denmark, to discuss this issue. Germany, along with other EU member states, has expressed its disapproval of the US visa sanctions against representatives of the PA and the PLO. The meeting in Copenhagen saw a call for a reevaluation of the US policy, with EU foreign ministers discussing the matter in detail.

The Palestinian representatives who wish to participate in the recognition of a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in New York in September, if not hindered by US visa sanctions, include President Abbas and about 80 other senior Palestinian officials from the PLO and the Palestinian Authority.

The EU's stance against the US visa sanctions is a reflection of its commitment to upholding international diplomacy and fostering peaceful dialogue in the ongoing Middle East conflict. As the UN General Assembly approaches, the focus remains on finding a resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of all parties involved.
