Internal discord within Values Union - Speculation over Maaßen's departure from the party
Werteunion Faces Internal Strife Amidst Leadership Dispute
The conservative small party, Werteunion, is currently experiencing a power struggle, with accusations of autocratic behavior, proximity to the AfD, and "dirty tricks" being levelled against its chairman, Hans-Georg Maaßen.
Maaßen, who joined the party in February 2019 and founded it in early 2024, has been accused of seeking proximity to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in public for months, according to deputy chairman Sylvia Pantel. In a video message, Pantel also referred to disturbing hate posts by Maaßen on various social media channels.
The power struggle within the party could potentially harm its reputation, as Maaßen's alleged dismissal of the elected board occurred at a conference with the state chairmen. Pantel alleges that Maaßen dismissed the elected board of the North Rhine-Westphalia state association of Werteunion and unlawfully appointed four followers. Legal action will be taken against Maaßen's actions in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Maaßen's statement from Wednesday indicates that he no longer considers cooperation with the current board of the Werteunion to be trustworthy. He accuses parts of the board of attempting a coup and power grab. Hans-Georg Maaßen, the federal chairman of Werteunion, has accused parts of the board of a coup.
Jörg Meuthen, former AfD chairman, also joined the Werteunion in September 2024. The party was founded to bridge the gap between the Union and the AfD, but the current power struggle could potentially harm the party's reputation and electoral success.
In the past, the Werteunion has never achieved significant electoral success, with results between 0.2 and 0.6 percent in state elections last year. The future electoral success of the party could be affected by the ongoing power struggle within the party.
Maaßen is unsure about his future membership in the party, stating that he is not willing to take on the responsibility of the party as a figurehead or "breakfast director". No official announcement has been made regarding Maaßen's possible withdrawal from the party.
Sylvia Pantel, who was previously the state chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia, has been vocal in her criticism of Maaßen's behavior. The Werteunion party's leadership and members have been under scrutiny for their autocratic behavior and potential association with the AfD.
