The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been experiencing a significant period of upheaval in recent months.

On July 29, 2025, Susan Monarez was confirmed as the CDC director by the Senate, following her appointment by former President Donald Trump. However, her tenure was short-lived, as she was replaced by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on August 28, 2025, when President Joe Biden appointed him as the interim director.

The change at the helm of the CDC came amidst a wave of departures and resignations. Five high-level CDC officials left the agency in March 2025, and four senior career officials, including Dr. Deb Houry, Dr. Dan Jernigan, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, and Dr. Jennifer Layden, resigned following Monarez's departure.

One of the most notable resignations was that of Dr. Fiona Havers, who led the CDC's tracking of hospitalizations from COVID-19 and RSV. She stepped down on June 16, 2025, citing concerns over how the data could be used to shape national vaccine policy.

Another significant development was the resignation of Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos, who oversaw the CDC's recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines.

In a move that raised eyebrows, Kennedy removed all 17 members of the CDC's vaccine advisory panel, the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP), on June 9, 2025, and appointed eight hand-selected members to replace them, including some who have expressed vaccine-skeptic views.

The ACIP held its first meeting since Kennedy replaced all the members on June 25, 2025, and announced it would be reviewing the current childhood immunization schedule. On June 26, 2025, the ACIP recommended an RSV monoclonal antibody shot for babies but recommended against flu vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal.

The CDC has also faced other challenges. On Aug. 8, 2025, a gunman opened fire at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, resulting in the death of a police officer. The gunman harbored a years-long grievance against the COVID-19 vaccine. In the aftermath, HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill was named as the interim director of the CDC.

Monarez's departure from the CDC was announced on Aug. 27, 2025, and she was later nominated by Trump to be the CDC director, a nomination that remains pending.

The events at the CDC have raised concerns about the future of public health policy in the United States, particularly in relation to vaccines. As the situation continues to unfold, the public will be closely watching developments at the CDC.
