Insight - Colonel Owens' Viewpoint: Like St. Francis, it is indeed in giving that we find true receipt

In a heartwarming display of alumni camaraderie, a group of classmates from Dixie Heights High School, who graduated in 1965, have been consistently giving back to their alma mater for the past 10 years. The annual event, a scholarship fundraiser, has seen them raise a significant amount over the decade, totalling $20,000.

The driving force behind this initiative is Colonel (Ret.) Owens, a retired legal aid attorney and law professor, and the author of "Bending the Arc Toward Justice." Colonel Owens has been involved in the project from its inception, sending out emails soliciting contributions and overseeing the distribution of funds.

Each year, the group manages to collect $2000 for the scholarship. At their Christmas Dinner in 2011, they decided to establish the scholarship in their Class's name, marking the beginning of this generous tradition. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student to help defray the expenses of higher education.

The scholarship application process is competitive, with numerous outstanding applicants sometimes making difficult choices. The process takes into account the student's academic record, letters of recommendation, and an essay about their experience and plans.

The scholarship has been a blessing for Colonel Owens, reinforcing his belief that giving leads to receiving. He expressed hope that other classes might take up the project, but so far, none have followed suit.

This year, a $2500 scholarship was awarded, marking a significant increase from the initial $2000. The speaker did not mention any health limitations or dwindling numbers in this paragraph, indicating the vibrancy and continued commitment of the class.

Colonel Owens is also a member of the Boards of Directors of Kentucky Voices for Health and the Kentucky Board of Elections, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to community service.

As the class prepares for their 60-year reunion this year, they continue to uphold the tradition of giving back to Dixie Heights High School, inspiring hope that other classes might pick up on the project in the future.
