Schloss Kummerow's Photographic Collection Remains Closed for Third Consecutive Season

Schloss Kummerow, one of the oldest and largest Baroque buildings in the country, is currently housing one of the largest private collections of contemporary photography in Germany, yet its treasured artworks remain out of sight for the third consecutive season.

The collection, which includes works from renowned artists like Marina Abramovic, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Ute Mahler, has not been on display due to exposure to light, requiring restoration and reproduction. Some notable pieces, such as "Abiturklasse" by Werner Mahler and "Love Parade" by Andreas Gursky, are in need of restoration and reproduction.

The museum's owner has invested several million in private money into the project, but lacks the resources to continue its operation alone. The museum requires dehumidification, heating, staff employment, and exhibition framing and curation, which are costly. Economic constraints, including rising energy costs, also play a role in the collection's non-display.

The closure of the castle during the multi-year full closure in the village and the budget cuts in art and culture were not beneficial for Schloss Kummerow. The castle, beautifully situated by the lake but remote, works with local schools and kindergartens, providing educational opportunities for the community.

In addition to the museum, the castle is open for tours, events, and weddings. Despite the empty walls, it welcomes guests who wish to explore its historic halls.

The pictures are stored in silk paper to allow them to "breathe," preserving them for future generations. However, a reopening under a new concept of the collection would be a huge undertaking, requiring funding for the immense pictures' transportation, framing, curation, and other costs.

Funding for the renovation of the stable has been promised, but the application has been lost in bureaucracy. The museum's operations are based on private and donation funds, with no grants provided for its ongoing operation.

Corona, when museums closed while hardware stores remained open, was a turning point for Schloss Kummerow. The castle, like many institutions, is navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic, hoping for a brighter future where it can once again share its collection with the world.

Schloss Kummerow is open for advance registration for visits. Until then, the castle stands, a testament to the beauty and resilience of art and history.
