In the city of Kirchheim (Kreis Esslingen), the Municipal Ordinance Office's (MOO) Ordinance Service conducted targeted focus checks in the pedestrian zone last week. The checks, prompted by an increasing number of complaints from the public about dangerous situations and near-miss incidents, aimed to ensure the safety of this protected area primarily intended for the use of pedestrians.

According to Ordinance Service Director Michael Althammer, pedestrian zones are areas designed specifically for the safety and use of pedestrians. He emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations in these heavily frequented areas, stating that driving through pedestrian zones with bicycles or e-scooters increases the risk of accidents.

During the checks, the MOO identified 169 violations. Each violation resulted in a warning fine of 25 euros. The main focus of the checks was on the unauthorized use of bicycles and e-scooters in the zone. Those who drive through pedestrian zones with these vehicles endanger others, as per Director Althammer.

Director Althammer reiterated his concern, stating that each collision in pedestrian zones, even at low speeds, can result in serious injuries. He further highlighted that compliance with regulations is crucial in these areas due to their high population of families with children and elderly people.

The Ordinance Service will continue conducting checks in the coming weeks to ensure long-term safety in the city center. The goal of these checks is not just to penalize violations, but also to prevent them through presence and education. Director Althammer emphasized that the safety of pedestrians is of utmost importance and urged everyone to respect the rules in pedestrian zones.
