On September 26, 2025, at 6:30 PM, the Equal Opportunities Office of the city of Bottrop is hosting a special reading at the Filmforum of the VHS. The author and journalist Nora Burgard-Arp will be reading from her debut novel, "We, Not Us".

"We, Not Us" is a dystopian novel that combines current societal political debates with futuristic elements, set in a future Germany shaped by massive social regression after a dictatorial party takeover. The story follows 37-year-old Mathilda, who unintentionally becomes pregnant, a situation considered a serious crime and punishable by life imprisonment in this society that denies women the right to self-determination, treating them as mere "breeding machines".

Faced with despair and inner rebellion, Mathilda searches for solutions, challenging not only her own life but also the values of the society she lives in. The novel encourages readers to engage with questions of bodily autonomy, resistance, and democratic responsibility.

After the reading, visitors will have the opportunity to talk to Nora Burgard-Arp and delve deeper into the themes of the novel. For more information about the event, please contact the Equal Opportunities Office of the city of Bottrop.
